Is it burnout, or is it stress?

There is a difference, but sometimes it’s hard to know what an individual is dealing with. Burnout is not just simply a result of long hours. The cynicism, depression, and lethargy of burnout can occur when a person is not in control of how the job is being carried out. 

“Since May 2019, World Health’s Organization’s 11th revision of the international Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) classified burnout as a medical condition, an occupational phenomenon”. The new definition called burnout syndrome is a result of a chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

Stress is a strong contributor to burnout. Stress can cause severe health problems and, in extreme cases, can cause death. If a person doesn’t tailor responsibilities to match a true calling, or at least take a break once in a while, the person could face a mountain of mental and physical health problems. 

The parameters of burnout are in desperate need of clarity and these new international standards could greatly improve diagnosis and treatment. Stress management techniques have been shown to have a positive effect on reducing stress in people’s life today.
